Beads nailed on: some hidden memory –
heavy, sharp, unfinished

Bring them near the coil: they lit up –
the past flickers, glowing faintly

Draw them back, returns the darkness –
quiet, peace, safe

Trauma can be recovered only when “the brain structures that are knocked out during the original experiences … are fully online. Visiting the past in the therapy should be done while people are … firmly rooted in the present and feeling as calm, safe, and grounded as possible”, which “opens the possibility of deeply knowing that the terrible events belong to the past” (van der Kolk, 2014, p. 81).
